About Van Neste Square:
Van Neste Square is located in the middle of downtown Ridgewood. Van Neste offers a relaxing spot for people to come and sit after a busy day shopping through town. Located in the park are several memorials, benches, and beautiful gardens that are all connected by a brick path.
Rev. John Alfred Van Neste:
Van Neste Square was named after Rev. Van Neste who was the first pastor of the First Reformed Church of Ridgewood. He helped in the process of building many other community churches in and around Ridgewood.
Brigadier General Abraham Godwin Memorial
In Van Neste Square is a memorial dedicated to Abraham Godwin. Abraham Godwin was born July 16, 1763. He was a Soldier, Statesman, artist, poet, engraver, and a very talented musician. As a soldier Abraham went to Fishkill joining his brother, Captain Henry Godwin's regiment, the Fifth of the Line, January 17, 1777, as a fife major. Before Ridgewood got its name, it was called Godwinville in his honor. Godwin Avenue is now named after him.
War Memorial
Many
people visit it for its memorials like the War Memorial. This is the statue
with the giant eagle on top! On
the bottom, there is a plague which has the names of Ridgewood's citizens who
have died while serving their country in our various wars. On Memorial Day
every year, the town holds a ceremony in honor of the war dead, and people
leave wreaths at the memorial in honor of the fallen soldiers, sailors, and
airmen.
Van Neste Square Today:
Many social events and activities are held at Van Neste
Square including yoga classes, school dances and food drives. It is also a busy
location of the NJ Transit bus stop. Many people though just visit for the
beautiful scenery of downtown Ridgewood and relax on the park benches.
